Sérgio Carronha

Born in Cascais, Portugal, 1984. Lives and works in Montemor-o-Novo.

His practice is focused on ceramics and earth materials, creating unsettling objects that value raw materials, their provenance and their possibility of reutilization. In 2010 he moved from Lisbon to Alentejo (Southern Portugal). This region rapidly became the main source of inspiration for his work, and throughout the years the artist has developed a deep connection and understanding of the nature and culture of this land that transpires through his thought and sculptures.

Through his wanderings in the interior of the country, the artist finds archeological artifacts, geometric archetypes from distant ages, different clays and other surprising finds from the temporal and material stratification of soils and cultures. Besides producing his sculptures on his land, Sérgio Carronha is also developing there a long-term land-art project, in which he aspires to expand his sculptural practice and model the land on a larger scale.
